When it comes to the World Wide Web, website design and development is an often cited term. Despite its wide usage, it is not always understood correctly. Here is what you as a small business owner need to know about the design and development of your website.
What is website design and development?
Consider website development as a super set, of which web design is a subset. In simpler words, website development is a term that encompasses website design, web content development, ecommerce development, network security configuration and every task related to creating a website. However, more often than not, you may find web professionals using ‘website development’ to refer to the non-design aspects of building a website.
A website, in essence, is a collection of information which appears in the form of text or graphics. Graphics include videos, images, animations etc. This information is referred to as the “web content”. The first page of any website is known as the “home page.” All pages of a website are designed separately and then connected through hyperlinks in a navigation system or menu.

Long gone are the days when a website would merely offer information and no option for online sales. Most business websites today have an eCommerce website design, offering the option to buy (or sell) online.
eCommerce is a term which stands for ‘Electronic Commerce’. According to Wikipedia electronic commerce is, “the buying and selling of products and services over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computing networks”. A business site with an eCommerce website design allows users to buy the desired item or service virtually without having to do it physically. However, many eCommerce transactions involve transporting products physically. Internet usage has made the amounts traded via eCommerce grow exponentially. The eCommerce technology is used to transfer funds, internet marketing, transaction processing online and much more.
By making your website graduate to an eCommerce website design, you can further grow your business. This is especially true for items and services such as mobile phones, premium online content & templates etc. which have an element of impulse to their purchase decision. Such a website design makes sure that you do not lose potential customers by them choosing another product or service after leaving your website. Instead you can ask them to make a purchase then and there if you use an eCommerce website design.
